Well, Earlie, if you say the VW diesels are reliable, I have to believe it. I am not sure if I could find a good mechanic for one if I needed one fixed, however, since I think hardly anyone owns them where I live. At one point I was driving a somewhat damaged Peugeot diesel station wagon just for kicks. I got it for $500. I had to accomodate myself to it more than I have any other automobile I ever owned, but it got fanstastic mileage for the tank-like vehicle it was. And when it was finally totalled in the low-speed head-on collision, my own experience was less violent than have have had in bumper cars. The other car was demolished but luckily no one was seriously hurt. But the problems I had starting that diesel in cold weather were pretty severe.

Anyway, if I thought I could get good service on a diesel I might try one again. Do you have to change the oil every thousand miles on these newer ones?

It does sound as if small diesels have largely replaced gasoline cars in Europe. Maybe when gasoline hits $5.00 in the U. S. they will be for sale here. I wonder why Toyota does not make one. Incidentally, several of my relatives have bought Priuses and they all like them. My brother was checking the MPG meter when a great big truck cut in fron of him on the Interstate. The mileage instantly jumped to about 80 mpg. Have you tried drafting an eighteen-wheeler from Winnipeg to Calgary? <G>
