It was the murder of some groups for the benefit of other groups.

In order to get people to commit murder on a mass scale, they must be convinced is it is not "murder." The people who ran the extermination camps were highly educated for the most part, not the normal "thug" we would think of as a murderer. Altruism is defined many ways. The definition of "altruism" I am using is that it is moral to sacrifice an individual for the the good of the group. This rises out of the concept that man can be considered a sacrificial animal.

Once you sell this concept it is easy to generalize it to the public. You start with taking from the rich to give to the poor. You kill babies who are deformed because they can never be fully functioning grownups. Etc.

As I said, most of the misery of the 20th century arose out of this concept.
