Do you really believe it's utterly impossible that some US soldier shot at, say, an al Jazeera reporter considering such reporters to be part of the terrorist family?

No, I don't consider that impossible, considering that Al Jazeera reporters are part of the terrorist family. But I still would be surprised if an American soldier deliberately shot someone who had been pre-identified as an unarmed reporter hanging about with insurgents. Shoot him during the course of a firefight, sure, just as American reporters get killed by IEDs all the time, mistake the glint of a camera for a sitefinder, or give him a hard time once captured. But no, I still doubt the troops would deliberately shoot him.
