I see. Well, let's talk about technology that is here today then. Honda just added an option to their V-6 Accord to have a parallel hybrid engine. It adds about 8 mpg and also adds extra power to the engine, so that it actually performs better and faster. The option costs about $3K.

So if the average driver puts 10K miles on their car per year, we're talking a savings of 130 gallons of gas per year. At the current price of roughly $2 per gallon, that's a savings of $260 per year. It will take 11.5 years to even the cost out between the Honda with a hybrid vs the one without.

This technology is in its infancy. So we can expect the cost savings and the mpg differential to go up quite a bit over the next decade. Then the economics will seem alot more compelling to the average consumer.
