Debkafile - Lebanese ex-PM Rafiq Hariri is dead. He was assassinated in huge car bomb blast that targeted his motorcade near Saint Georges Hotel on Beirut seafront midday Monday. At least 10 killed and 100 injured amid massive devastation of luxury district in worst bombing since 15-year civil war. Two were former cabinet ministers.

DEBKAfile reports: Five of dead were Hariri’s bodyguards and its commander Yahye al-Arb, who drove in same car as Lebanese leader. Assad condemned the murder as "a terrible criminal act."

Hariri’s death is grave setback to Bush administration Middle East policy goals. After Iraq and Palestinian elections, Hariri was key leader designated to carry out reforms of Lebanese system of government after spring elections.

Five-term PM Hariri stepped down last year in protest against extension of presidential term of pro-Syrian Emil Lahoud and led opposition to Syrian occupation of Lebanon.
