Peter -

Actually, the shortfall in Social Security should only be temporary, though lasting a couple of decades. As the Baby Boomers begin to retire, there will be more people receiving benefits, and fewer people paying into the system. But as the Boomers begin to die (sorry for putting that so harshly), the ratio will improve.

Your mention of MediCare is imporant. MediCare is in MUCH worse shape than Social Security. Yet we don't hear the President talking about a crisis in MediCare or warning that we must act now to save it.

And of course, we do have to do something about Social Security. I haven't heard anyone say otherwise. But we don't have to act hastily. We could take the same approach that Reagan took in the 80s. Appoint a bipartisan commission to study the situation, giving them the necessary time to do a thorough job and allowing them to consider all the options. Then implement the solution they come up with.
