Debka - Chirac accused Damascus and its Lebanese allies of slaying Lebanese ex-prime minister and prominent opposition leader and demanded urgent international probe. French president was in a meeting with Israeli foreign minister Shalom when news reached him. Debka portrayed this assassination as a huge blow to Bush's plans. But I don't know. If Bush was weighing the idea of going after the Baathists in Syria (at the request of the new Iraqi government, naturally), a provocation so huge that even Chirac can't deny it could be useful. This was a great big F--- Y-- from Bashar Assad to George Bush. Maybe Bush reasoned, Bashar is none too bright, keep the pressure on him and he's sure to do something really stupid. And now guess what? Just speculating.
