I cannot understand why we have to pay significant higher drug prices while the rest of the countries pay a lot less.

To imply that if we enjoy cheaper drug prices the companies research will collapse seems a very far reach.

These are competitive companies. I fail to understand why they do not set a fair return on each drug sold into a country? Why doesn't mrk and pfe when trying to sell drugs to Canada set a limit on acceptable margins? These prices wouldn't be as low as they are in Europe and Canada if the companies were looking at profitable returns. Are they only looking at recovering fixed costs? cannot a mrk or pfe walk away from selling drugs to canada etc. if the returns do meet a minimum acceptable amount? If drug companies were to base bids or sales on profit guidelines then perhaps they could lower the prices in the united states.

I look at the problem as more the drug companies than the countries or our gov. who are driving the prices. i am not talking about price controls or price fixing but competitive pricing that will give an acceptable return to the countries all over and the drug industry.

We should not be in the business to subsidize other countries drug usage that hurt our elderly and poor with high drug prices here.

Unless the drug companies get more responsible in pricing their products to other countries then i would be for some type of gov action.
