mindmeld, pfalk brought up a very important consideration ... AC power failure.

In my area, cable keeps going out of service during thunderstorms ... from the lightning part of the thunderstorms. But my Plain-Old-Telephone-Service (POTS) keeps on ticking.

Sometimes lightning hits or ice storms fells trees which take down lines indiscriminately ... both cable and telephone lines ... so then neither has an advantage. But until cable service stays up and running during power outages, I'll be keeping my POTS with at least one POT, rather than a cordless phone that depends upon AC power too.

Cellular phones? Heck, if I can't charge the batteries, they don't work but a couple hours either.
