You've got it backwards. Shias are more liberal than Sunnis. Sunnis are the ones who typically have Wahabbist leanings. Sunnis are the ones who have typically been very intolerant of the Shias and Kurds, or any other Muslims sect or non-Muslim religion.

Iranians on the other hand are typically well-educated and alot more liberal, with the exception of the Iranian leadership.
