I couldn't disagree more. I'd say that we are a profoundly nationalist country at this juncture, and that patriots and patriotism are in alarmingly short supply.

Virtually every social, economic and political argument in America today is predicated upon the concept of government involvement in our lives, Constitution be damned. Socialism and fascism are merely two facets of what is intrinsically the very same impulse toward a total state, and whether called Republicans, Democrats, Greens, or by some other newfangled name they gain ground wonderfully when wrapped neatly in Old Glory.
