I don't know who this David Kirkpatrick is. But I watch TV and hence that should enable me to get unfiltered news. I have heard Harry Reid, Bill Clinton and Howard Dean say over and over again (Dean as late as last Saturday) that he supports "the women's right to choose". He does not want the state and others to make that decision for her. He also went onto add that the Democrats are going to hammer away on that message that they support life bit that for an unborn child whom God has chosen a woman to bear, the choice is between the woman and her God. We are not her God. So Democrats are still very much a supporter of "woman's rights" not of "abortion"
