The Silicon Laser story even got mentioned on CNN news, but unfortunately it was described as a "Silicone Laser."

This is an impressive research milestone. A discrete Silicon Laser may be marginally cheaper than the traditional laser. Hopefully the technology allows other IC functions to be implemented on the same chip. Then the improvement in cost/performance will become big.

It is interesting to see Intel leading the way in basic R & D. This function was the domain of Bell Labs and IBM Research Labs, the two entities which got their funding from the monopolistic profits enjoyed by AT&T and IBM. In the last decade the profits at these two organisations have dwindled, cutting off the basic research funding.

Now Intel has to productise the this important research, something which IBM Labs and Bell Labs often failed to do.
