NY Times Spins Greenspan

By Bob Kohn

So, the big news today out of Washington was that Alan Greenspan announced he is in favor of private accounts for social security. Here's how New York Times reporter David Stout reported the news in his lead sentence:

WASHINGTON, Feb. 16 - The Federal Reserve's chairman, Alan Greenspan, said today that he favored private accounts within Social Security, a pillar of President Bush's plan to revamp the retirement system. But Mr. Greenspan also signaled that he wanted to change Social Security slowly.

So how did the copy-editors write the headline for their website today?

GREENSPAN FAVORS CAUTIOUS CHANGES IN SOCIAL SECURITY

Huh? Just what you'd expect from the Times: make it look like Greenspan thinks Bush is not being cautious. Perhaps someone will have the sense to change the lead tomorrow to something less laughable.

Think about it: What's the news in favoring "cautious changes"? Isn't that exactly what President Bush is proposing? No change at all for people over 50; allow young people to voluntary take a very small slice of their social security payments and put them into highly-regulated private accounts invested in risk-free government bonds and a diversified portfolio of low risk equities.

How cautious does Bush need to be to get a headline like, "BUSH FAVORS CAUTIOUS CHANGES IN SOCIAL SECURITY"? Mind-boggling.
