At some point we have to hoist up an age and say "That's the point of no Return" and throw away the keys.

I understand the simplicity and appeal and practicality of such a principle. But I have to admit that my libertarian soul rebels against it the idea that every member of a class should be denied certain rights because the majority of members of that class can't handle those rights.

I agree that the alternative would be very, very difficult for the police and courts to enforce. Your statement is by far the most practical one. But that doesn't mean one has to like it, or not rebel against it in one's heart.
