Our defense spending exceeds the rest of the world combined, and dwarfs that of any single country.

The US military spending does approach the military spending level of the world less US and China. The opinions you stated do not reconcile with this.

Cost of weapon procurement in China (and military personnel) is substantially less than in the US, so while in absolute dollars China spends in the neighborhood of 75% as many dollars as the US, it appears likely they are rapidly stockpiling weapons.
