Associated Press Ohio County Suspends Use of Tasers Thursday February 17, 5:07 pm ET Ohio County Suspends Use of Tasers Following Suspect Death Who Police Shocked Nine Times TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- Police have suspended their use of stun guns following the death of a suspect who had been shocked nine times. Lucas County Sheriff James Telb said Wednesday the department will not use Tasers again until more safety studies are conducted. He said his officers have used Tasers about a dozen times since they went into service last year. ADVERTISEMENT Jeffrey Turner, 41, died last month after he was shocked five times by police and four times by guards at the jail. The coroner's office has not released a cause of death. Telb said no policy violations were committed in Turner's death and no charges would be filed. Taser International Inc., which makes the stun guns, has said they are among the safest ways to subdue a violent person. A message left at the company's office was not immediately returned Thursday. Taser shares fell 10 cents to close at $14.38 in Thursday trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Its shares are down 57 percent from their 52-week high of $33.45 reached late last year. Touted as less lethal than other ways of subduing combative people in high-risk situations, Tasers are used by more than 7,000 law enforcement agencies worldwide. The stun guns temporarily paralyze people by using two barbed darts to deliver a 50,000-volt jolt that can penetrate clothing. But the safety of the weapons have come under fire by human rights groups as a number of deaths have been blamed, at least partially, on the devices. Last week, a 54-year-old man died in Chicago after a stun gun was used on him and a teenager was seriously injured in a separate incident. Police said they would not distribute more Tasers until an investigation was complete.
