Unfortunately, AIDs drugs have almost succeeded in changing a death sentence into a chronic disease instead. The gays from the mid to late '80s still remember the death sentence visited on their friends. The younger crowd perhaps sees it a bit differently. I fear that the push for cheap AIDs drugs in Africa will ultimately result in most the continent becoming HIV positive. Given all the other things one can die from in Africa at 60, who cares if AIDS + cheap drugs only gets you to 50?

A couple weeks ago I visited the Bay Area, and the S.J Mercury News had a graph showing AIDS deaths and infection rates for Bay counties. IIRC, Santa Clara only had one new infection in 2004, and S.F about 39??. The peak rates in the 80's where 2-3K for S.F. Very interesting graph. You can see how it slips into the background for the younger crowd.
