Looks like the competitive waters are getting cloudier. Omtool (OMTL) went public a couple weeks ago and it competes directly with RightFAX, AVTC's fax server subsidiary. The past two days both Robert Stevenson and First Albany have initiated coverage with a BUY and a STRONG BUY respectively and the stock is up 20%. (I know that First Albany was involved with the IPO so no surprise there. Don't know about RS.) I read the FA report and it sounds like there is currently enough room in the industry to support both growing revenues at high double (if not triple) digit growth for the next few quarters. OMTL is exclusively going after NT users (96% of revenues from NT products). It has signed a strategic alliance with Active Voice (AVTC primary competitor in the voice messaging segment) where Active Voice will integrate OMTL's fax control software into its message center product to be released next year.

After reading the report I got the impression that the company (OMTL) is growing at triple digits but that its not a great innovator. There near term development products were not discussed at all making me believe that this copany may be a one product company and incapable of the continuous development we see at AVTC.

Right now it is trading at a rich multiple of 75x est. '97 earnings but that should be good because it may mean expanded P/E multiples and attention to AVTC through its RightFAX division.

Personally, I think both companies are great investments and currently own AVTC. I would buy some OMTL as well if I had any cash though because I think the whole segment (fax server software) will do well for atleast the next two years.
