Something is not automatically right just because it is the established punishment.

My support for democracy is not just for the idea that it is more likely to get decent government than other forms of government, or even that government should in some vague way represent the will of the people. I think each person should be able to have input on the government that will be over him or her. I think the government gains legitimacy by this fact and to the extent that we make it less true we make the government less legitimate.

And we are not just dealing with murderers, rapists and other violent felons, or even non-violent felonies that are serious crimes but also people who committed felonies that probably shouldn't be considered crimes. (Of course the main point there is to change the law making it a crime not to change the punishment).

OTOH I can't imagine that in general the group of people who are committed felons would be more educated, more intelligent more reasonable voters.
