I am not much into obsession, but I think health and safety are very important considerations in life. I had kind of a rebellious youth that stretched from college right into my very early thirties, and involved plenty of radical and self-destructive behavior.

What really changed my world view was having a child. When you have a baby, if you are reasonably healthy and thoughtful, you want that sweet little thing to grow up in a wholesome environment, and you want to be there as long as you can to share its life. Everything changes when you have a child. I had gotten healthier a couple of years earlier because I wanted to have a healthy pregnancy and everything, but I still had friends who were kind of wild.

Once I had my daughter, they just didn't seem to fit in my life anymore, and I ended up dropping them because I so much preferred being around healthy new life rather than smoke and the smell of alcohol and marijuana and bad language. "Adult" activities seemed just dirty and jaded.
