As kids, in the summers my sisters and I used to collect the green caterpillars that were feeding off of milkweed plants and put them in jars with a few milkweed leaves for them to continue to feed on. Generally after a few days they would work to the lid of the jar and spin themselves into a cocoon. Then after 10 days or two weeks the cocoon would begin to turn transparent. Inside you could see the forming monarch butterfly. Once they were fully developed they would begin to work their way out of the cocoon. At this point we would take the lid outside and turn it upside down. They would slowly extend their wings drying them out. Once the wings were dry off they would go.
