S. Korea to Maintain Technological Edge Over China Until 2010
SEOUL, Feb. 21 (Yonhap) -- South Korea is expected to maintain an overall technological advantage over China until 2010, the Korea Industrial Technology Foundation said Monday.
The foundation's research, conducted from June 2003 onward with the cooperation of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, touched on the industry sectors of digital appliances, steel, metallic molding, construction equipment, car parts and men's clothing.
The findings revealed that South Korea's edge in digital electronic appliances was one or two years ahead of the Chinese. In steel it outpaced the mainland rival by one to four years and in the area of metallic molding was ahead three to five years.
South Korea's construction equipment manufacturing was ahead by five years, with auto parts and men' clothing leading by two to three years and three to four years, respectively.
It said, however, that despite the technical edge, China already enjoyed price competitiveness vis-a-vis South Korean companies, while aggressive tie-ups with foreign companies was quickly eroding South Korea's lead in other areas.
"By 2010, the level of China's technical expertise will be on a par with South Korea," a government official said.
