I find it hard to believe Martin McGuinness was involved. He's a devout Catholic and dedicated family man. He has a daughter named Grainne, btw. :)

We should remember that Loyalists have much more at their disposal than just a couple of paramilitary groups. Remember The Committee? In case you don't, it was the brainchild of Billy Abernethy, manager of the Westminster Bank in Belfast. He had support from the higher ranks within the RUC and UDR security forces as well as the paramilitaries. This group sanctioned many murders and a few bank robberies. There are elements within the Protestant business community who are extremely paranoid over the rise in influence of Sinn Fein, and they'll do anything it takes to stop them. One bank robbery in Portadown in 1987 was initially blamed on the IRA but was later proved to be carried out by three Loyalist paramilitary groups.

The Committee
Author: Sean McPhilemy
Publisher/Format: Roberts Rinehart Pub
Year of Publication: 1998

In 1991 a British television documentary crew led by Sean McPhilemy produced a hard-hitting program about a vast conspiracy among the various loyalist factions in Northern Ireland that was responsible for the cold-blooded murder of several innocent Irish Roman Catholics. A member of "The Committee," interviewed for the program, revealed that the shadowy organization had such deep penetration into the Royal Ulster Constabulary, Northern Ireland's law enforcement force, that the two main gunmen essentially received a police escort to and from their killing sites. But that wasn't all: McPhilemy named names, identifying prominent Loyalists who were secretly in on or gave tacit approval to the assassinations. The ensuing controversy after the show's airing resulted in legal action and death threats against him, as well as vilification from the floor of Parliament and the pages of the British press. McPhilemy instigated libel actions against two newspapers that questioned the integrity of his work; one of those suits has been resolved in his favor, with the other pending trial at the time of the book's publication. The Committee is a gripping story of terrorist atrocities and political corruption. While most Americans are more aware of the brutal acts of the IRA, this book makes clear that their opponents have been just as capable of committing evil in the name of their cause. No one who reads this book will soon forget it For legal reasons this book is only available through Amazon US.
