There is an ancient Chinese curse that translates to "may you live in interesting times". The history that makes the best reading is also the times when the average people are taking it on the chin in some fashion. So while everyone would prefer to live in one of those unremarkable periods that even hard up history grad students avoid like the plague, sometimes the flow of events have a way of reaching out and grabbing people by the throats. Things have been pretty placid in this country over the past few decades, and most Americans have been content being focussed on their own concerns and not worrying about the big picture. I don't think we have that luxury any more.
