Here is a tip: the straw man fallacy is committed when a person 1) misrepresents another person's position and 2) then attacks the misrepresented position.

As an example, say an economist wrote "Bush's first term had the worst full term job creation since the Great Depression" (An accurate statement).

Then, committing a straw man fallacy, a right wing pundit says: "Liberals think the economy is as bad as the Great Depression". Then the pundit will attack that position: "Where are the shanty towns?"

Of course the right wing pundit misrepresented the economist's position and then attacked that misrepresentation - he created a "straw man" and then knocked it down - the "straw man" fallacy.

NOTE: I included the personal attack fallacy too! Was the economist a "liberal"? Maybe, maybe not ... all economists agree that Bush's first term had poor job creation, they just disagree on why.

On to my statement: "There never has been any evidence of "working ties" between Iraq and al Qaeda." That statement is accurate. You can argue it is conclusory and I stated it without substantiation (you would be correct), but it is not a "straw man". I am not misrepresenting your position, nor am I attacking a misrepresented position.

This has been a free logic lesson for you<g>. One free lesson is your limit.
