Not my experience, though haven't been around retail for many years. Still, I have a friend or two that worked for independents within the past decade or two. Small retailers have been at the bottom of the pay scale for many, many moons.

I suspect you're generally correct about the small shop owners. Some do well, absent better competition.

Nonetheless, the big boxers expand economic opportunity. Lower prices give their customers more "stuff", while creating more jobs. Hell, hereabouts I'd expect the WM payroll is equal to or greater than the total (retail payroll) that existed prior to their arrival.
