Marriage is a term that has many dimensions. The most obvious is the element of civil union that is recognized by the legal and social community as giving the couple official recognition.

Beyond that there are many aspects of marriage that transcend the political definitions of whatever unites a couple. I am quite sure every intelligent person gets that. You bowed out of that discussion with me earlier and we both know why. Your snipes in third party posts are quite revealing, btw.

It is not necessary to use the term marriage if we want to ensure equal rights for all citizens or groups. In fact it seems everyone is willing to do just that. Insisting on the use of the term marriage is not a solution as much as a disruption in the process.

Annexing the term 'marriage' instead of 'union', 'civil contract' 'bond of fidelity' or any of a host of other possibilities is the attempt by those lacking any faith to involve God in politics. It is quite ironic that your big complaint is that it does precisely that. Not really ironic, more like disingenuous, even insidious.

My recommended solution is that all civil marriages be banned (That is under the assumption that both sides honestly want a solution, which I doubt). All couples wanting state sanctions should be required to go to the justice of the peace and get a legally recognized civil union. Anyone wanting to be married can go to their church, mosque, temple, the desert, or whatever and have their religious authority do what ever ceremony they like and pronounce them married. If your group recognizes gay marriages, so be it. The state can get out of the marriage business all together.

Many people do just exactly that, because some types of marriages are not recognized internationally until there is a marriage certificate in the courts.
