I think for anyone who is self-employed or owns a small business, it is in your own interest to shop at local independent stores.

If you own a small business, Wal-mart is never going to be a customer of yours, and even if it were they would use their position to cut your margins to the bone. A local retailer, on the other hand, may someday become your customer. So one hand washes the other.
