I agree that college isn't for everyone. But for many, it is a very important step. Also, there are some economics in higher education - only another "elite university" is going to try to charge the same for tuition as say, Harvard or Stanford (the $50,000/year figure). So, if you've got a kid that is a good enough student, to get into a $50,000/year (tuition, books, living expenses) school, he/she is probably good enough to get in almost anywhere (like a less expensive state school), or get financial aid.
But for many young people, it (college) represents the first time they have faced a long term goal that they must work for - by themselves. No Vice Principal is going to call your mom up and ask why you didn't show up for class. No parent-teacher conferences - for the first time, its really up to the student. |
