His views on gays surprised me. I think they are genuine.

I think they are genuine, too. He never made an issue of gays. Then, when the business of the marriage amendment came up, he initially said it was unnecessary at that time. He came out in favor of it in the heat of the campaign, then the WH said after the election that he wouldn't promote it. Apparently that didn't go over well with the core because he backpedaled soon after. I've had the impression all along that his heart just wasn't in picking on gays.
