My speculation, however, is that he would have been killed if he didn't agree to play ball not that they were definitely going to kill him. Otherwise, why tell him three times about "credible reports" that his plane was to be shot down? Since the reports were clearly "manufactured" there must have been a very important reason why he was told about them. I maintain this reason was to provide an alibi to those who would have shot his plane down.
