My dad used to whip me with a belt when I got out of hand (I would have laughed if he threatened to "spank" me), and the schools I went to used to paddle boys for damned near anything (the remedy of first resort was detention, but since among the boys it was generally agreed that anyone who actually showed up for detention was a wimp, and given that the penalty for skipping detention was paddling, a sentence of detention was de facto a sentence to be paddled), and I've generally been in favor of corporal punishment at home and in schools, but in today's world I think it serves no purpose.

Aggressiveness and toughness used to be positive attributes in boys, but those days are long gone and parents who resort to corporal punishment are pretty much dinosaurs. Better to raise your kids to deal successfully with the world they live in than to deal with a world that no longer exists. Raising little dinosaurs may appeal to a parent's sense of values, but it does the child no good as he will have to live in a world where dinosaurs are extinct.
