I've refrained from getting into that issue, but perhaps you'll allow me to express my opinion in the hopes of bringing that topic to a conclusion.

I don't think there is any doubt on anyone's part that China believes Taiwan is a renegade province. That includes Taiwan.

Taiwan on the other hand has experienced a great degree of independence. In some sense, it doesn't appear to be as important to them to declare independence as it is to have independence.

There also seems to be a good number of parties [governments] that believe if Taiwan were to declare independence than their real independence would be immediately threatened by China.

It also seems that most parties [governments] wish to maintain the status quo...Taiwan has independence without having declared independence. The Chinese don't seem to mind this too much as they are willing to maintain the status quo believing that one day they will reacquire Taiwan.

The Taiwanese seem to be at least comfortable enough with China that they are doing a booming business with the Chinese.

And so it will continue until something different happens. And it's impossible for any of us to predict the future outcome with unknown future dynamics.
