What do you think we are doing with defense?

Defense isn't an "inefficient and loss making investment" it isn't an investment at all. And the burden of the spending has always been much lower than it was for the Soviets.

You don't think an airbase is an investment? What about a ship? As I understand the term, both are investments in the military's infrastructure.

Why do you think we have run such high deficits since WW II?

Mostly from increased social spending.

And increased defense spending......from $52 million in 1962 to $454 million in 2004. At least social spending directly benefits the citizens of the US.

SS is not the problem; defense is.

Social Security is the number one program and will pull away from defense even further while itself being passed by Medicare.

Defense is the problem. If we did not spend a disproportionate share of national revenues on defense, we would have more than enough money for SS.
