GM's Directv Unit Faces State Inquiry - Wsj

Received: September 03, 1997 04:30am EDT From: REUTERS

NEW YORK, Sept 3 (Reuter) - General Motors Corp's DirecTV
unit is the focus of an investigation by 20 state attorneys
general, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The states are investigating DirecTV over possible consumer
fraud violations after customers of the satellite-dish service
complained about recent channel changes, the paper said in its
electronic edition on Wednesday.

DirecTV is owned by GM's Hughes Electronics unit .
AT&T Corp has a small DirecTV stake too.

The company removed channels from a presold package, then
later sold the channels in a higher-priced package, the paper
said.

The complaints are similar to those lodged against some
cable monopolies several years ago that led lawmakers to
regulate the industry, the paper added.

In July, the attorneys general started requesting
information from the company, the paper said.
