Synthetic crudes have a good shelf life, but they are newly created and, unlike natural crudes, haven't aged for a few million years before pumping. Stability largely depends on how deeply the crude is hydrotreated. For a company like Syncrude Canada Ltd., which produces only one product, the final product can be very well controlled. Syncrude will soon be starting to produce an ultra-low sulphur syncrude, which should be very stable. Other companies will meet whatever specs their customers demand.
