<<Gloop, WHY are we at war in Iraq?>>

There are several reasons and probably none that you will accept.

1) We were operating with intelligence that may have been 100% wrong. I say "may" because its plausible that what weapons they had (of the WMD variety) were shipped off to Syria and still may pop up. But lets just agree that as of now our intelligence was wrong because we can't prove weapons went anywhere. That same intelligence was generally accepted around the world, even by countries who did not support our actions. It was also supported by Hans Blix who stated that he believed Iraq had them as well. He said this well after the war had started (10 months after). So while Bush may have been wrong I don't think it's fair to say he was outright lying because he was operating on intelligence that was generally accepted to be true. Furthermore, he was doing so after a 9/11 event that was a serious wake up call to US citizens and government alike who had always taken for granted that terrorism was something that happened elsewhere but that we were safe here. How wrong we were and Bush was going to error on the side of proactive protection to safeguard our country and its people. That's what we expect and as it turns out he's being vilified for doing so. But can you imagine if he had not been proactive and something happened here - AGAIN? I know which way I'd rather be view as "the goat."

Now before you point out that Iraq did not participate in 9/11 please read on. If you remark that Iraq didn't participate in 9/11 I'll know you didn't read this post in its entirety.

2) While Iraq was NOT the brains, the work or associated with 9/11 we do know Saddam was a bad ass with his people. We also know that if he had WMD abilities or even knowledge of them (and we know he had some knowledge because we made the mistake of giving to him - our fault but still a mess that needed to be cleaned up) that he'd be more than happy to either use them or pass along the technology to someone who would use them against the US and our interests. He would have done this because he was still pissed off about 1991 - a war in which HE was the aggressor and we, and a solid coalition, kicked his ass back to the 70's - and rightfully so.

3) Good, bad or indifferent we are in Iraq. With that comes a responsibility to fix the current state of affairs that we've played a significant role in causing. But we've also ousted Saddam so not everything is bad but the body count is mounting and that needs to end - SOON! However, Iran and Syria are playing some dirty pool by sending thugs and terrorists ( I call them terrorists because they are operatives sent in with 1 purpose - to upset things and create death and chaos so that our efforts fail and we look bad) into a country that has limited security and that were trying to fix. That's wrong and the reason they are doing this is because if Democracy takes hold and oil revenues are shared with the people and used to build infrastructure Iraq will be a beacon of hope and prosperity. That would make Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia and the neighboring countries look bad as well as make them rip for a people driven coup. They don't want that because they currently have a religious and political grip on their countries that keeps people impoverished and keeps DAMN FEW in charge*. It also allows them to continue to use extremist religion as a weapon to teach hate and recruit anti American thugs in the name of Allah.

So we're at a crossroads with that entire area of the globe. We can either be proactive and not allow them to pursue WMD's while recruiting in the name of Allah or we can do nothing in an effort to reduce their recruitment efforts. I think its probably true that our actions increase their ability to recruit and create terrorists. But in the end countries like Iran are still pursuing WMD's and given their less than stellar history (with regards to terror and hostage taking) I don't think we want them to have nuclear weapons.

* I put this up there because some would argue that we too have a small power base in this country. While their may be some truth to that I believe that each of us can climb the ladder and become influential and wealthy in our country. Not everyone can for a variety of reasons but many of those independent variables lie within the person rather than the system. Admittedly some are systemic

Please tell me you read all of this....I'm sick of wasting my time and not having people read the entire posts. Some read them and opt not to respond because they can't - they know I'm right. Others grab just a line and run with it out of context rather than reading the entire post. This is a well thought out post and I believe it to be quite accurate
