Gains in productivity are as much a product of the state of mind as adopting technology. Depending upon how new EU countries adapt their social and economic policies, they may far out perform old Europe. Or they may be sucked down the socialism path of slugish to stagnant growth.

As the cost of energy increases, American productivity make goods more affordable locally and accross the world.

But the overriding factor may be the simple fact that Americans are far better informed in general than those outside the USA.

And technology in the USA and it's far more pervasive use will I believe continue to keep Americans better informed. Ultimately productivity is about the flow of correct information.
