I'm of a mind that real estate investment (if done properly) is much better than money in the bank.

I'll say! The house I deeded over to my ex when we divorced a few years ago has doubled in value. I am very happy for her. She will sell it this year and move to smaller quarters. The profit will give her a bigger nestegg.
