One didn't have to agree with everything that he said to be a fan of Hunter Thompson. He was a uniquely American character who also happened to be a perceptive human being and a damn fine writer. When I first read "Hell's Angels" in the late 60's, I immediately read it again. I have never ever done that again, but this book was that different.

The daughter (more a niece) of a close friend had seen and enjoyed the movie "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" when it came out in 1998. She was 18 at the time. For Christmas that year, I gave her a copy of the book as well as a copy of "Hell's Angels." She became of huge Thompson fan and spread the word amongst her circle. I love to give books as gifts and I love it even more when the gifts spark a fire.

I am also a huge fan of Tom Wolfe and was I pleased that the Wall Street Journal published his piece. While Wolfe and Thompson were not cut from the same mold either politically or culturally, they shared the same passion for observing their fellow citizens in action and writing about it. They may not have revolutionized journalism, but they have both certainly helped it evolve.
