Both my friend and his wife are avid readers, and my "niece" and her brother, who is one of my godchildren, grew up with the habit. My godchild turned 21 yesterday and his sister is four years older. Starting with the age of four or five, they have each gotten at least one book from me every Christmas. I was always careful when they were younger to vet the books with their parents, but the kids were pretty much allowed to read whatever they wanted. My mother took the same approach with me and my sister when we were growing up and she would periodically get into arguments with her friends. It was a scandal of sorts (in those more simple times) that I was reading Leon Uris at the age of 12 or 13.

I gave my godchild a copy of Edwin Lefèvre's "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator" just after he started college and was asking questions about the stock market.

I told him that my first reading of the book when I was 16 made me hyperventilate. He got hooked and has spent the last two summers working at a Board of Trade in downtown Chicago. That is a scandal of sorts, given that his father is a union official.

Alas, while I have been able to influence them with books, turning them politically has proven impossible. They have followed in their parent's foot steps and evolved into yellow dog Democrats. <sigh>

Getting children to read (most anything, as you note) is one of the greatest gifts that can be bestowed on them.
