I can only used covered calls myself.

I don't see how the cash in an IRA can be used as security for a debt to a broker or exchange or third party ... if you lose big selling options, then tell the broker "thank you very much, now please send me all the cash in my IRA account," I don't think the broker can refuse.

Unless there has been a change to the federal statutes, that cash cannot serve as security for any obligation. That's why IRAs don't count as assets when you apply for a loan.
