I completely agree. I always tell people that the best thing they can do for any child is to encourage reading- supply whatever the child wants to read (I think even graphic novels are fine for struggling readers- graphic novels are novels in a comic book type style, NOT X-rated novels), pay the child to read (because some children really do take a while to enjoy reading, and why shouldn't they be rewarded for something that is initially painful), and most importantly, set a good example for reading. I think children do imitate their parents and especially their mothers, in this area- and we know from studies that maternal education level is one of the most important predictors of how well a child will do in life.

I think it's so wonderful you have been active in getting children involved in reading. It is noble to feed the hungry, and clothe the needy, but helping people furbish their minds has to be right up there also. :-)
