Mike,

Thanks for the frankness of your reply. I try not to believe politicians in general, especially about subjects as delicate as WDMs. It is quite likely that certain factions in Iran want to develop a nuclear device. I was simply arguing that it is at least plausible to take the Iranians assertions that they wish to develop peaceful uses of nuclear energy at face value. Reliable energy supplies are a basic need of all societies. Iran may be blessed with good supplies of oil and gas presently, but it is doubtful that at current rates of depletion these fields will provide the answer to Iran's energy needs, and much less her forex needs a century from now. Solar and nuclear both make sense for Iran's longterm energy portfolio.

I am not oblivious to the threats that might be posed by fissile material in the wrong hands. However, I assume that if Iran wanted such materials she could probably obtain them through a variety of sources, and I doubt they are the binding constraint in the development of Iran's WMD capability.

I am open minded, however, and reserve the right to change my mind as new data is forthcoming.

Sam
