I actually doubt that anyone is allowed to sell naked puts in an IRA because as you say the liability is unlimited as with short selling.

But obviously if you buy puts and calls with cash, they are fully paid for and the liability is limited to what you paid. I probably should have tried to open an IRA with a broker who would let me trade options because I have certainly paid a lot of taxes on options profits.
