UPS gets green light to expand flights between US and China

WASHINGTON : Express delivery and general freight specialist UPS, whose brown delivery vans are a common sight on American streets, has been given the green light by US regulators to expand its air operations to and from China.

UPS said in a statement that the US Department of Transportation granted the company the authorization to expand its flights to China on Tuesday.

The delivery giant has been granted two new "frequencies" to Shanghai and one new frequency to Guangzhou, effective next year, it said.

UPS currently flies its cargo jets from the United States to China 12 times per week, but will now be expanding that number to 18 flights this year.

The additional flight frequencies are key to UPS' plans to establish a regional air hub in Shanghai.

"The new frequencies will allow UPS to better serve customers by offering full seven-day-a-week service to Guangzhou and increasing capacity to Shanghai on the two busiest days of the week, Thursday and Saturday," the company said.
