I could have defended Jaynes better than his lawyer did, not that I would want to. The US mail is loaded with unsolicited junk mail.
There is practically no way of escaping it. The US postal service would loose revenue if there were any coordinated attempt at stopping the problem. Nope, they prosecute unsolicited phone, fax, and e-mail, but revenue generating US mail is left alone. There you go.
