Referring to the person heading the Plame investigation as the special prosecutor is misleading. He would be more correctly referred to as the special counsel, which is not to be confused with an independent counsel. When the right wing went on the witch hunt after Clinton which lasted for so many years and wasted so much money they appointed an independent counsel. An independent counsel would have almost certainly have gotten to the bottom of this scandal by now.

When John Ashcroft recused himself from the job of special counsel it raised a few questions as to why he would do such a thing. If he knew who was guilty it was his duty to see that the person was brought to justice. Some say the only reason he would recuse himself is that he was involved in some way. After Ashcroft recused himself the assistant Attorney General appointed Patrick Fitzgerald to be special counsel.

Many Senators protested this appointment and wrote the whitehouse (among other places) asking that an outside special counsel be appointed instead of someone already employed by the federal government. These requests were ignored. Fitzgerald is United States Attorney from Chicago. He remains as the special counsel and not much seems to be getting done.

After the special counsel was appointed junior hired a lawyer to represent himself. This also raised a lot of questions as to just why he needed a lawyer unless he was involved.

Dragging things out seems to be the rule rather than the exception with any issues having anything to do with something which might shed a bad light on this administration. See also the Chenney energy meetings, the Enron scandal and the committees investigating the 9/11 tragedy to name a few.
