Based on cause and effect. Unless a pathogen kills by inducing a hyper-immune or auto-immune response, engaging the immune system is usually the route to controlling the pathogen. At one time much of medicine was based on immune augmentation, until the success of chemotherapies like antibitotics made research into the human immune system seem unimportant. When the immune system loses a fight, it is usually due to the head-start the pathogen gains before the immune system recognizes and responds to the pathogen. Reducing the delay in immune response to H5N1 avian influenza is the basis for both vaccination and interferon-alpha.
